Siemens partners with Spinnova to accelerate sustainable fiber production
Siemens has announced a strategic collaboration with sustainable textile technology pioneer Spinnova to revolutionize the global textile industry by accelerating the production of eco-friendly fibers. This partnership underscores Siemens’ ongoing commitment to sustainability and digitalization in manufacturing industries.
Spinnova, known for its patented technology that produces textile fibers with minimal environmental impact, is collaborating with Siemens to transform fiber production. Using Siemens Xcelerator automation technologies, software, and services, Spinnova has significantly reduced its time to market while increasing operational efficiency.
“With their unique technology, based on circularity, Spinnova is setting a new standard for environmental sustainability in the textile industry,” said Eryn Devola, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Digital Industries.
The collaboration focuses on scaling Spinnova’s innovative process, which mimics spider web weaving to create textile fibers from materials such as wood, leather, textiles, and agricultural waste. SPINNOVA® fiber requires “98% less water and emits 74% less CO₂ than conventional cotton while generating zero waste and using no harmful chemicals.”
The impact of this collaboration is showcased at the Woodspin factory in Jyväskylä, Finland, a joint venture between Spinnova and pulp producer Suzano. Siemens’ digital twin technology, including the Tecnomatix® portfolio and Opcenter™ software, has been instrumental in optimizing production processes, simulating factory operations, and enhancing material flow efficiency. The use of Siemens’ Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) and Industrial Edge technologies has further streamlined operations, ensuring real-time monitoring of energy consumption and operational efficiency.
“Working with Siemens has transformed how we approach manufacturing. Their technological expertise has enabled us to ramp up production quickly and brings credibility to our mission,” said Tuomas Oijala, CEO of Spinnova.
