Viola Schmidt, a master’s student in artistic design at Reutlingen University’s TEXOVERSUM Textiles faculty, has won the prestigious 2024 “Feel the Yarn” design award in Florence, along with a €5,000 prize. Her winning design, “Closer Distance,” created using an ADF 530-32 ki BcW multi-gauge flat knitting machine from STOLL, features high-quality merino wool and silk yarn from Filatura Tollegno 1900 S.r.l. Inspired by the interplay of proximity and distance in the digital age, the design was lauded for its sustainable, seamless construction and innovative use of red tones and layering. Schmidt drew inspiration from the STOLL Pattern Shop, showcasing the potential of its creative knitting patterns in her award-winning work.
